OKLAHOMA CITY -- Fresh off of playing a thrilling five-set match last night (Oct .9), the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels gave the Texas Wesleyan University Lady Rams all they wanted before succombing 3-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference action today (Oct. 10) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
After the Lady Rams took the first two sets by identical scores of 25-14, the Lady Evangels found a rhythm and used a 9-1 spurt to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 17-11 edge.
The Lady Rams battled back to within 21-20, but kills from Emily Lynch and Larissa Runyan followed by consecutive attack errors by the Lady Rams gave MACU the set 25-21.
The fourth set saw the Lady Rams start quick and jump out to a 10-3 lead before extending it to a 21-8 bulge.
But the Lady Evangels refused to go down without a fight, as two kills from Lynch and a kill each from Melissa Hoppal and Mary Burkhead helped trim the deficit to just 22-16.
That was as close as the Lady Evangels got though as the Lady Rams got two kills each from Starnisha Bodie and Abby Zipoy to close out the set and the match 25-17.
Hoppal led the Lady Evangels (11-8, 2-7 SAC) with nine kills and Hannah Luedtke recorded a team-high 29 assists along with 17 digs. Camera Broadnax led the way with 27 digs and Runyan also had 12 digs.
Bodie had 16 kills and Zipoy tallied 15 kills to pace the Lady Rams (16-9, 5-3 SAC). Kristina Gafford led everyone with 43 assists and Shaughnessy Hearn had a match-high 32 digs for TWU.
The Lady Evangels will next hit the road and play Tuesday night (Oct. 13) at Bacone College. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla.
