Greenville, SC -- It seems only fitting that Mid-America Christian University junior guard Sarai Rodriguez would put a bow on her historic 2016-17 season by being named the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Player of the Week, the organization announced today (Mar. 21). This is the third straight and sixth NCCAA Player of the Week award overall this season for Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, the NCCAA Player of the Year, averaged 14.7 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game, two assists and 2.7 steals per game in the Evangels' three NCCAA National Tournament outings this past weekend in Winona Lake, Ind.
With a bucket early in the first quarter of the Evangels' NCCAA Third-Place game against top-seeded Roberts Wesleyan College, Rodriguez joined the 1,000 point club for her career. She finished with 16 points to give her 1,015 career points, the most in the Evangels' NAIA history.
The Austin, Texas native also finished the year with 674 points and 101 threes, both single-season highs for the Evangels as an NAIA program.
Rodriguez posted a team-high 19.8 ppg overall on the season, helping the Evangels to a 23-13 overall record under first-year head coach Hannah Moeller. The 23 wins are the most in the program's history as an NAIA school.
