Winfield, Kan. -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels swept past the Manhattan Christian College Thunder today (Aug. 26) at the Southwestern College Triangular in Winfield, Kan. In their season opener, the Lady Evangels dropped a 3-1 decision to SWC.
The Lady Evangels got off to a dominant start against the Thunder, taking the first two sets 25-15 and 25-17. MACU then finished the match off with a dramatic 32-30 win in the third set.
Laurel Church paced the Lady Evangels with 16 kills, followed by a career-high 14 kills from Larissa Runyan. Emily Lynch, the team's starting setter after primarily seeing time as an outside hitter as a freshman last year, recorded a career-best 30 assists.
Camera Broadnax led four Lady Evangels in double-figure digs with a team-high 16.
In the opener, the Lady Evangels took the first set against the Southwestern College Lady Builders 25-21 before SWC fought back to even the match 25-19 in the second set.
The third set was back-and-forth until the Lady Builders eked out a 26-24 win to take the lead. SWC then cruised to a 25-13 win in the fourth set to close out the match.
Church and Runyan each had 10 kills against SWC, while Lynch tallied a game-high 29 assists and a team-high 20 digs. Runyan had 19 digs and Skylar Mylonas, playing in her first career game at MACU, produced 17 digs.
The Lady Evangels will next be in action at Central Baptist on Tuesday evening (Aug. 30) at 6 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
